Astrud Gilberto bio
Astrud Gilberto (b. March 29, 1940) is a Brazilian-born singer best known for her jazz style samba and bossa nova music. Astrud was born Astrud Winert from a Brazilian mother and a German father in the state of Bahia, and grew up in Faculdade de Arquitetura do Rio de Janeiro.
In her mid-teens, she became part of (her own words) a "musical clan", and met João Gilbert... o, who she described as the clan's musical "guru". She married him a few months later, in 1959. Astrud frequently sang duets with João or sang while he accompanied her on guitar and and he acted as her musical tutor. She also sang publicly with João during a concert at the Faculdade de Arquitetura do Rio de Janeiro (a well know university in Rio de Janeiro), but was not paid.
Astrud and João moved to the United States in 1963, when she performed on the influential Getz/Gilberto album with João Gilberto, Stan Getz and Antonio Carlos Jobim. While rehearsing The Girl from Ipanema, João asked her to sing an verse in English and then persuaded Getz to include this in the final recording.
