Levine began writing the track a few years earlier about a failed relationship, which is a common theme in Levine's writing. But revisiting the song for this It Won't Be Soon Before Long, he recognized a whole new dimension to the track and made the song more political. Said Levine: "There is so much going on in America at the moment. I hope we (the US) can dig ourselves out of this hole. There's a bunch of confusion going on in the world.''
