Punk Blues Bands to Know: Blues Roots With a Punk Attitude

Punk blues is a music genre with a combination of punk and blues elements. We have listed important representatives of the punk blues genre for you, whether bands or solo artists.

The Black Keys

Lonely Boy by The Black Keys is the music video with the most views on their official YouTube channel. It was published on her YouTube channel on October 26, 2011. One of The Black Keys’ musical styles has been categorized as Punk Blues.

Jack White

The title of an online article in the Canadian music magazine Exlaim! about an album by Jack White is: ā€˜No Name’ Is Jack White’s Ferocious Return to Old-School Punk Blues.[1] This fact should already be considered proof that Jack White’s music can also be assigned to the punk blues genre. His album No Name was released in 2024.

The Kills

About the song Future Starts Slow, which the English-American rock duo The Kills performed on the late night show Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, the music magazine SPIN titled the performance as follows: The Kills Bring Goth-Punk Blues to ‘Fallon’.[2]

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion

The name of the band The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion suggests that the music has something to do with the blues. In fact, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion have numerous musical influences from the following genres, among others: punk, blues, garage, rockabilly, soul, rhythm and blues and hip hop.

Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds

Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds fuse garage punk and blues rock. Kid Congo Powers has also played in a number of other punk blues bands, most notably The Gun Club.

The Gun Club

Over the years, The Gun Club had 27 musicians in the band. Most of them were guitarists, bassists and drummers. The band’s singer was Jeffrey Lee Pierce. In addition to punk blues, The Gun Club’s musical styles included post-punk, punk rock, psychobilly, alternative rock, punk blues and cowpunk.
